Coatimundi Odor: What Can Be Done?

Do coatimundi smell? This is a question you almost certainly will be asking yourself, if you are interested in owning a coati. Anybody who has done their research will know the answer: yes!
Coatis do, in fact, have an odor. And it's quite strong.

Their odor is not as powerful as other exotics, like foxes. I'd say it's really similar to that musky odor ferrets have. It's not pungent, but it will stick to your clothing and also you, until you take a bath. Their feces also pack a punch- but really, does any animal have poop that doesn't smell bad? Coati poop smells like dog poop, but it depends on what you feed your animal. A proper diet will give you firm, well formed poops that have a lot less odor. A poor diet, and you'll have runny poop that smells horrendous.

But... What can be done about this odor? You can never get rid of your coatis smell completely, but there are things that you can do to reduce it:
  • Feeding a proper diet
  • Keeping your coati clean with monthly baths, wiping it down when dirty
  • Cleaning their enclosure or indoor containment daily
  • Using Goodbye Odor in their water to reduce fecal odor
These are all tried and true methods. Goodbye Odor has mixed results- some owners report it helping a lot, others say it gives their coatis loose stool. For me, personally, it gave my coati Vega loose stool, so I no longer use it.

If you are concerned about how coatis smell, I highly suggest you visit one in real life. If you can't handle their odor, it's in both of your best interests to not get one.
